Urban Planning Vision toward 2050
Benghazi 2050 proposes an urban framework for Benghazi, Libya, based on three priorities: cultural and spatial continuity, climate-responsive planning, and data-informed decision-making. The proposal links the historic core, the Mediterranean waterfront, and future expansion areas within a coherent structure capable of supporting long-term growth and phased development.
The Courtyard Commons draws from the courtyard house and shaded transitional spaces of local architecture. Courtyards, arcades, and protected streets are reinterpreted at building and neighborhood scales to address privacy, family life, community interaction, and climatic conditions. The approach focuses on spatial and environmental principles rather than the direct reproduction of traditional forms.
Mixed-use neighborhoods are organized around service, cultural, and knowledge hubs, connected by public transport, pedestrian routes, and cycling networks. Density and building height respond to infrastructure capacity, accessibility, heritage conditions, and the wider urban landscape. Along the coast, a continuous public-space network connects the Mediterranean waterfront with inland districts.
Environmental measures include solar protection, shaded public spaces, drought-tolerant planting, permeable surfaces, and seasonal stormwater management. Their performance should be tested through local climate data and environmental simulation.
AI, GIS, and urban digital twin systems support scenario testing, land-use analysis, mobility planning, microclimate assessment, and energy evaluation. These tools are intended to strengthen planning decisions through measurable data and community feedback.
The proposal positions Benghazi’s identity as a working basis for future development, combining cultural continuity, environmental performance, and a structured planning framework toward 2050.
